Clan Craft gameplay example

I wrote this gameplay example to showcase how the mechanics of ClanCraft work in action. From clan creation to resource management, from combat to construction, every player decision shapes the development of their community.

The game begins with clan creation, where players define their group's identity, starting resources, and settlement location. Characters face tests based on their attributes and tools, with a system that rewards extra successes and introduces critical successes for particularly effective actions.

Resource gathering plays a crucial role in progression—the more successes you achieve, the more materials you collect. Combat is tactical, considering attacks, defenses, counterattacks, and armor, with special abilities that can turn the tide of battle. Construction follows a similar logic, requiring tests to determine the quality of structures built and offering potential bonuses through critical successes.

Finally, the XP system rewards players not only for combat but also for construction and heroic actions, encouraging a balanced gameplay experience that blends strategy, community growth, and challenges.

This session demonstrates how ClanCraft seamlessly integrates management, storytelling, and tactics into a cohesive experience. What do you think?

Laura is the Game Master (GM).

SESSION START

GM: "Before we begin, let's establish your clan. According to the rules, you start with a Q1 Basic Camp that houses 20 people and produces 4 units of Q1 food per week, along with a Q1 Storage capable of holding 20 resource units. Who are your people?"

Sarah: "Elena is the clan’s master builder. Most of our people are craftsmen and farmers who fled northern raids."

Michael: "Thork has been training a small group of young guards. Our craftsmen need protection."

GM: "Great! What’s your clan’s name and symbol?"

Sarah: "The Watchtower Clan. We believe in standing guard over those who cannot defend themselves."

Michael: "Perfect. Our symbol should be a tower with a sword, representing both protection and vigilance."

GM: "And your motivation?"

Michael: "Protection. We've seen too many villages burned by raiders. Our main adversary is the Blood Lords, a clan from the north that drove our people from their homes."

Sarah: "Elena feels personally responsible for those who couldn't escape. She wants to build something lasting—a true sanctuary."

BEGINNING THE GAME

GM: "After days of travel, you finally find a promising location for your settlement: hills to the east, a river to the west, a dense forest to the north, and open plains to the south. Your people are exhausted but hopeful. What do you do?"

Sarah: "Elena surveys the terrain carefully. We need a defensible position with access to resources. I’ll use her Intellect to analyze the land."

Intellect test (5 dice): 3, 4, 4, 5, 6

Successes: 5 (4, 4, 5 = 3 successes, 6 = 2 successes)

GM: "Elena quickly identifies the ideal location: a raised area near the hills. The elevation provides natural defense, the view covers the open plains, and the river is close enough for water but far enough to prevent flooding."

Michael: "While Elena plans, Thork organizes the guards into patrols. Four of our young warriors secure the perimeter."

Sarah: "We need resources. Elena will direct the collection of wood for a palisade. That’s another Intellect test, plus my Q1 hammer bonus."

Gathering test: 6 dice (5 Intellect + 1 hammer) vs Threshold 3 for Q1 materials

Rolls: 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6

Successes: 5 (4, 5, 5 = 3 successes, 6 = 2 successes)

Two extra successes = 3 units of Q1 wood gathered

GM: "Under Elena’s guidance, the logging operation runs efficiently. However, the sound of chopping wood attracts unwanted attention..."

GM: "Three wolves emerge from the tall grass! They are Q1 creatures with:

  • Base Die: 1 die
  • Defense Threshold: 2
  • Natural Armor: 0

Your clan members scatter back toward the camp."

Michael: "Thork steps forward, shielding the workers. 'Elena, get our people back! I’ll handle this.' I attack the first wolf with my sword."

Attack test: 5 dice (4 Dexterity + 1 Q1 sword)

Rolls: 2, 4, 4, 5, 6

Successes: 5 (4, 4, 5 = 3 successes, 6 = 2 successes) vs Threshold 2

Damage = Q1 weapon (1) + 3 extra successes = 4 damage

GM: "Thork's blade strikes true! The first wolf collapses. But as Elena helps a young worker retreat, another wolf lunges at her!"

Sarah: "Elena tries to fend it off with her hammer, but she’s no fighter."

Defense test: 3 dice (2 Dexterity + 1 hammer)

Rolls: 1, 2, 3

No successes vs Threshold 2 - FAILURE!

GM: Rolls wolf’s Base Die (1 die): result = 4

Counterattack = Base Die (4) + (Threshold 2 - 0 successes) = 6 damage

Minus Q1 armor (-1) = 5 damage

"The wolf's fangs tear through Elena’s leather armor! She takes 5 damage, reducing her HP to 4."

Sarah: "Elena stumbles back, bleeding. 'Thork! A little help here?'"

Michael: "Time to use Precise Strike! This ability allows 3s to count as successes."

Attack test: 5 dice (4 Dexterity + 1 sword), 3s count as successes

Rolls: 2, 3, 4, 5, 5

Successes: 4 (3, 4, 5, 5) vs Threshold 2

Damage = Q1 weapon (1) + 2 extra successes = 3 damage

GM: "Thork’s sword strikes cleanly, felling the second wolf. The third flees into the forest. The clan members cheer from the safety of the camp."

SECURING THE SETTLEMENT

Sarah: "Despite her wounds, Elena refuses to rest. 'We need a watchtower immediately. Those wolves won’t be our last threat.' She’ll use Intellect and her hammer to build a Q1 watchtower."

Building test: 6 dice (5 Intellect + 1 hammer) vs Threshold 3

Rolls: 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6

Successes: 6 (4, 4, 5, 5 = 4 successes, 6 = 2 successes)

Critical Success!

GM: "The tower rises quickly under Elena’s expert direction. Thanks to her Critical Success, it's perfectly positioned, offering exceptional visibility. Your people immediately begin watch rotations."

Michael: "Thork helps Elena to the healer while overseeing the guards. 'You did well today, builder. Get some rest—we'll stand watch.'"

Sarah: "Elena, smiling through the pain, nods. 'Tomorrow, we start on real walls. The Blood Lords won’t find us as easy prey as those wolves.'"

GM: As night falls, your clan has:

  • Established a Basic Camp (housing 20 people, producing 4 Q1 food weekly)
  • Constructed a Q1 Storage
  • Gathered 3 units of Q1 wood
  • Defeated two wolves
  • Built a Q1 watchtower in a strategic location

You earn:

  • 1 XP each for combat (wolves - Threshold 2)
  • 1 XP for Elena for construction
  • 1 XP for Thork for protecting an ally

Your people gather around campfires, exhausted but hopeful. This might just be the place where you build something truly lasting.

I Hope that i can receive your feedbacks on the game!

Giovanni!
